MusH3/H3 Traditions and Terminology…

It is often said that “there are no rules on the Hash,” and this is generally true. However, to maintain some degree/illusion of organisation, most H3’s including MusH3, have sets of guidelines:

  • If it’s illegal in the non- Hashing world, then it’s illegal in the Hash.
  • Treat the opposite sex with respect… and ‘no’ means ‘no’…
  • No talk of politics or religion unless celebratory. Everyone is equal in the eyes of MusH3.
  • The Hash can sometimes be cheekily bawdy, but you are not forced to do anything you are uncomfortable with.

BYOBBring Your Own Beverage/s. There will be water and soft drinks only provided at MusH3.

Circle -This is the gathering and social intercourse after the trail. The Circle is a revered and traditional part of the Hash run by the RA. There is an etiquette in the circle.

Down-Downs – a gift from the circle…

Hare – The Hasher who sets the trail.

Hare Raiser – Top Hare, organises and arranges Hares for forthcoming meets. *The Hare Raiser is the Hare, if no one else is available.*

Harriette – Female Hasher

Hash – A shortened name for the Hash House Harriers. Sometimes referred to as H3.

Hasher – Hash attendee, male or female

Hash Cash – Hash subscription

Hash Crash – Provision of a bed for the night to a visiting Hasher.

Hash Name – A Hasher will eventually be named by his/her Kennel, from which time this will remain their ‘Hash Name.’ This will be used at MusH3 and when visiting other Hashes. The name is usually chosen because of something they have done, or wished they hadn’t. A Hasher never, ever choses their own Hash name, and any attempts to do so or to change it could result in a worse one being awarded. You cannot run from this, and any bribery is ineffectual. A Hash has their own criteria for naming. At MusH3, an unnamed Hasher will be named on their fifth run with us, or after setting their first trail.

Headwear – No headwear in the MusH3 circle

Ice – Some Kennels use ice as a punishment, sitting on the ice as a forfeit for some misdemeanour. At the moment we haven’t decided whether to use ice in our circles.

InterHash – An international hashing event held every two years. Attendances can run into the thousands. Other variations of this are Nash Hash or Inter-regional Hashes.

Interhash – Interhash and Interhash Council

Kennel – A Hash group or chapter.

Left Handed Drinking – All beverages consumed in the Circle must be done using the right hand.

Mother Kennel/Hash – The Kennel which named you will always be your Mother Kennel/Hash.

New Shoes – Any Hasher caught wearing new shoes on a trail/hash, will be subject to the punishment of taking a drink from said footwear.

On-In! Indicates the end of a trail is near.

On On! – The battle cry of H3. Shouted when the correct trail is found or whilst are following it. Helps to keep the Hashers together. Used as a farewell, or when signing off Hash correspondence.

On-Out. -The start of the trail/run.

On-Up! – At the passing of a Hasher.

Red Dress Run – Charity Run whereupon all participants, male and female, wear a red dress (or just red…). In late 1987, Donna Rhinehart was taken to a hash in Long Beach, California. Arriving unsuitably attired for a Hash Meet, Donna was invited to “wait in the truck” until her friend returned. Instead, she joined the Hash in her red dress and heels and completed the trail.

The following year, San Diego Hash H3 sent Donna an airline ticket to attend their inaugural “Red Dress Run”. Hundreds of hashers wore red dresses for the event which was widely covered by local media. In addressing the crowd, “The Lady in Red” as she had become known, suggested that such hashes might be used for charity fundraising.

Donna Rhinehart passed away in 2013, leaving behind a Hashing legacy that has raised millions globally for charity. ON-UP

Rego – Registration to join a MusH3 Meet.

Run/Trail – The path you will follow… whether you run, walk or crawl it.

Run Report – Given during the Circle by a runner.

Shiggy -Mud, slime or anything wet and foul that the Hare will have you run through.

Technology – No phones or photography in the Circle, except by designated ‘Hash-Flash‘.

Virgin Hasher – Someone who hasn’t Hashed before, anywhere.
